Product Description
Explains how phrases are put together to form cohesive solos. Many styles are covered - rock, blues, jazz, fusion, country, Latin, funk, and more - and all of the concepts are backed up with musical examples. The 50 ideas are divided into 5 main sections: The Basics covers fundamental but all too often forgotten techniques such as slurs and vibrato that can breathe new life into your phrases. Melodic Concepts explores various aspects of melodic phrasing such as motifs, chromaticism, and sequences. Harmonic Embellishments discusses the melodic potential of harmonic intervals (dyads), chords, and chord partials. Rhythmic Concepts explores various aspects of rhythmic phrasing such as accents, free-time phrasing, and metric modulation, and how they pertain to melodic soloing. Solo Structure brings together all the topics discussed in the book to create the big picture. The companion CD contains 89 demos for listening and most tracks feature full-band backing.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing if you study correctly..   November 26, 2006

Do not simply memorize the licks.. study them.. ask youself what chord is being played as you solo over each measure. then ask yourself which intervals are being used in conjunction to that chord. memorizing shapes and boxes won't get you very far. Go deep into the reason why things work and this book will be amazing.

5 out of 5 stars This book has been very helpful.   July 15, 2007

Like the last reviewer stated, study this book. You get what you put into it. If you are a beginner, this is an excellent book to study with your instructor. If you don't have a strong background in music theory, than take Music Theory I - IV at your local community college. You certainly will get more out of this book if you do. Throw the CD away, you don't need it. If you can't read the rhythm, break it down and take the rhythm slow. Then slowly speed up till you got it. The criticism about left hand fingerings... that's beginner stuff. If you take it slowly, you can figure it out. If you put in the time, this book will make you a MUCH better guitarist. If you want to play like a great musician, you must practice like a great musician.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING book on Phrasing!   September 24, 2008
Charles Salgado-Gouker (The Death Star, FL)
This is an excellent book. Truly. It fills a guitarist with interesting ideas, and the creative guitarist will take these and expand on them. Every "Idea" in the book gave me MANY more ideas. But I am the kind of guitarist that just loves exercises so much that I geek out on writing my own. (I recommend it.) Truly though, this book gets me thinking in new and interesting ways, and any good guitarist can benefit tremendously from this book. Every single page is a gem waiting to be mined, if approached with a creative and open mind. Phrasing is important; this book examples various aspects of phrasing ... the rest is up to you, man! Learn theory and buy this - embrace change and find your ever-impermanent voice! Grab it, and then let it all go..... ;)

4 out of 5 stars very good   March 7, 2004

Good book. Worth the cost of a few lessons. Contains a lot of interesting licks and many ideas for variation and solo development.

Bad things: Should have included left hand fingerings.
Should have included complete theory behind the licks, e.g. some licks he is actually using licks that are based on a chord substitutions and passing chords, but he doesn't mention it. For a book like this it should have been mentioned. The uninformed reader would just think he is pulling them out of the air.

Should have been more chapters on solo development.

But still a very good book.

4 out of 5 stars Great book   December 20, 2005

As an intermediate level guitarist with quite a collection of guitar books - I am really happy with this purchase.
Unlike the "licks and tricks" type books I have previously purchased, this one goes into a little detail about the theory being applied with each example.
This book contains some really nice licks placed within solos which I found helpful for finding paths in and out of the licks taught (as well as some I already knew), and I am loving the experience of working through them.
While some of the styles (Jazz, Latin etc) are not really what I am looking for, they were still good exercises and the applied theory was still useful. I imagine in years to come as I move into these styles for some variation, this book will still be very useful.
In short - I highly recommend this book to guitarists like myself - intermediate level, who can play a lot of their favourite solos, but when it comes to improvising, despite knowing scales and a few tricks, still sometimes sound a little boring. This book will add some new licks to your arsenal, as well as some good material to help start pulling those skills together in a tasteful way.
